Synopsis:
She was always too much. Too loud. Too Emotional. Too big.
LOUD & ANNOYING VOCAL & EXCITED is a poetry collection that takes every label you've ever been forced to pick up, and turns them into something deliberate, powerful, and ultimately beautiful. Abi speaks through intimate and difficult poems, the collection shaping her life before and what's to come. Girlhood softened and accepted, the complicated tenderness and relationship with her immigrant roots, the constant battle with her body, and how she takes up space without apology.
This collection doesn't need to ask for permission to take up space. It speaks about identity, inheritance, shame, hunger, joy, and the radical act of learning to love the simple and complicated times.
Themes / Vibes:
L&A, V&E contains themes of trauma, childhood, girlhood, abuse, and joy.
Excerpt:
It's such a ridiculous prospect. It feels so silly to consider. / My therapist would ask me what's 'silly' about it / And I would laugh in a sad way and tell her / That our parents would have to pay for our beautiful funerals / And our cats would only be able to eat our bodies for a day or two / Because people would notice our absence / Because we're so so loved.
Development Notes:
L&A, V&E is a collection of poetry that has been brewing for some time. After being inspired by current events in my life, it's becoming physical. I'm excited to present my experience in girlhood to the world, in hopes that others feel the same way.
