ORCHID Project Details

ORCHID by a b phillips

ORCHID is an upcoming project. This page reflects the progress of the novel, all for the enjoyment of viewers.

Synopsis:
After the sudden and tragic death of her best friend, Bea Caldwell seeks comfort and friendship in the unlikeliest of places, her university's "entomology club". Invited to spend a weeklong retreat to study insects and become 'one with nature' Bea sees this as an opportunity to escape her grief. While surrounded by buzzing cicadas and the warmth of other campers though, Bea finds herself captivated by more than just the intricate world of bugs.

Themes / Vibes:
ORCHID contains themes of folk horror, cult horror, ecohorror, and weird fiction. Other subgenres include surrealism, absurdism, and psychological horror.

Excerpt:

Those who mourned, wept. And those who wept, grieved and struggled to stand. Bea could hardly recognize herself, standing beside Julia's parents, her face still and distant. Her body had gone numb and left her behind weeks ago.

Development Notes:
This story has been in development for two (2) years, having been started as a project for a college writing class. I'm currently revising and getting the story ready for beta-readers and editors alike to give me fresh eyes and better critique.
